Kahoot Alternatives for ESL Teachers: Devices, Tasks and Reports
Choose a Kahoot alternative for a specific teaching need: shared-screen discussion, reusable activity templates, different game formats, vocabulary sets or an English practice library. First check whether your current Kahoot account already supplies that function. The six options below solve different problems; none is a universal replacement.

Check the report, device mode and task before switching
The three-participant distinction: Kahoot's schools comparison lists basic reporting for participants and questions, with a three-participant limit on particular difficulty insights. It does not say that the entire free report contains only three learners. Standard reporting removes those insight restrictions. Check the exact information you need rather than treating the free tier as unusable.
The report help page distinguishes summary, participant and question views, and notes that access depends on account and subscription. Sign in when hosting and check the workspace that holds the session before concluding that a report is missing.
Device access: individual play and a group answer are different setups. The schools comparison also lists Classic unplugged, using one shared screen and a host-entered consensus answer. Its group accuracy cannot identify which learner supplied an answer. Do not assume that switching brands is necessary merely because every learner lacks a device.
Account category matters: the participant-limit guide currently lists 40 for K–12 Kahoot! Go; other account categories differ. Adult-course teachers should check their actual account category. Compare the relevant plan, billing period, currency and required feature on the current pricing page.
Comprehension and homework: questions about a passage or spoken message can test comprehension. The limitation of a selected answer is what it demonstrates, not an inability to ask about meaning. Kahoot also supports learner-paced assignments and access to existing activities through Discover. It is inaccurate to say teachers must always write every question or that Kahoot is only a live quiz.
Six alternatives, matched to the missing function
Preview the content and required controls with the account you intend to use. A game score, a team response, an individual attempt and a written paragraph provide different evidence.

In The Kingdom of English, ordinary reading and listening use multiple-choice answer keys. Reading RoboTeacher and writing feedback are separate AI-supported workflows. Teacher accounts have two class slots of up to 30 learners each. Assignment completion and the separate skill records are not an automatic measure of proficiency.
Grammar and Games remain available after the seven-day full-access trial; class access also depends on the teacher's feature settings. Not every activity is an assignment type. See the game guide before promising that a game will appear in an assignment report.
Use one task to test the evidence you get
This original fictional message can be used on paper or adapted into a quiz tool. It is not an exercise claimed to exist in The Kingdom of English's library, and it is not a measured classroom result.
Workshop notice
“The community centre's bicycle-repair workshop has moved from Tuesday to Thursday. It still starts at 6 p.m. Bring your bicycle if you have one; otherwise, use one of ours. Please book by Wednesday.”
- Which day is the workshop now? Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday
- What has changed? The day / The start time / The booking deadline
- Can someone without a bicycle take part? Give the words in the notice that support your answer.
- Write a short booking request for Thursday. Say that you need to use one of the centre's bicycles.
Answers and what each response shows
1. Thursday. Tuesday was the original day; Wednesday is the booking deadline. 2. The day. “Still” shows the start time stays at 6 p.m.; the notice does not say the booking deadline changed.
3. Yes. “Otherwise, use one of ours” supports that answer. Accept a clear paraphrase explaining that a centre bicycle is available. A correct yes/no selection without a reason provides less evidence of how the learner understood the message.
4. One possible request: “I'd like to book a place at Thursday's bicycle-repair workshop. Could I use one of your bicycles, please?” Accept other clear, appropriate wording that preserves both the day and the request. This is a writing sample, not a fixed-string answer.
Questions 1–2 can be selected responses. Question 3 asks for textual evidence; question 4 requires the learner to formulate a request. Use a suitable open-response option or paper for the last two. A quiz score alone does not contain all four kinds of evidence.

Try one fresh follow-up: say that Thursday is full and the learner can attend Friday instead. Ask them to revise their booking request. Check whether they update the day and retain the bicycle request. Do not infer independent language use merely from remembering an option in the first quiz.
Record the reason to keep or change a tool
- Task and audience: what should each learner understand or produce?
- Access: which account, plan, devices and connectivity does the activity require?
- Preparation: can you reuse a suitable resource, or must you adapt or write it?
- Evidence: can you inspect the response you need, or only a team total?
- Follow-up: what will you do with an incomplete, wrong or unsupported answer?
Keep a tool when it supports the task and the evidence you need. Add or switch only for a missing function that matters in your lesson. For an independent check after a game, use an exit ticket; for a fuller spoken response, use an appropriate criterion from the speaking rubric.

Are free Kahoot reports limited to three participants?

Can Kahoot support reading or listening comprehension?
Yes. Questions about a text or spoken message can check comprehension. A selected answer does not by itself demonstrate independent writing or speaking, so add a separate production task when that is the goal.
Does every learner need a device?
