About The Kingdom of English - ESL & EFL Practice Platform

David Satler, ESL teacher and creator of The Kingdom of English
Hi, my name is David Satler, and I'm the creator of The Kingdom of English. I've been teaching English in Austria for over 10 years, although I'm originally from Slovenia. Growing up multilingual gave me a firsthand understanding of what it takes to learn a language from scratch, the frustration of not finding the right word, the satisfaction of finally getting a grammar structure right, and the importance of consistent practice outside the classroom.
Throughout my teaching career, I worked with students at B1 through C1 levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). I noticed the same problem year after year: coursebooks offered too few exercises per topic, and students had no structured way to practise between lessons. Homework was either worksheets that disappeared into schoolbags or generic apps that could not be tailored to what I was actually teaching in class.
That gap between what teachers need and what existing tools provide is what motivated me to build something better. I taught myself programming and dove deep into AI and natural language processing, driven by a single question: what if a platform could evaluate open-ended student responses, not just check multiple-choice boxes, and still give teachers full control over assignments and tracking?
I launched the first version of The Kingdom of English in January 2023 and immediately started using it with my own students. Their feedback shaped every feature that followed. Within the first year, the platform grew from a basic grammar exercise tool into a comprehensive practice environment covering grammar, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing with AI feedback, and vocabulary training, a total of 60 topics per skill area.
By 2024, I added gamification features (points, leaderboards, streaks, coins, and virtual rewards) because I saw how much more consistently students practised when there was a competitive, game-like element. I also built four original language games: Noun/Verb/Adjective, Birds with Letters, Chest of Letters, and Kingdom's Secret Words, each designed to reinforce language skills in an engaging format.
In 2025 and 2026, the platform's AI capabilities expanded significantly. Reading and listening exercises now use AI to evaluate open-ended written responses rather than relying on rigid answer keys. The writing module provides detailed AI feedback on grammar, structure, and content. These advances were informed by research into AI-assisted language learning and feedback, including approaches outlined by organisations such as the British Council and Cambridge English.
Today, The Kingdom of English serves ESL and EFL teachers and individual learners. Teachers can create classes of up to 60 students, assign targeted practice across all five skill areas, and monitor progress through detailed dashboards. Individual learners get full access to all exercises and games. The platform runs entirely in the browser with no app download required, and a 7-day free trial is available with no credit card needed.
Everything you see on this platform, the code, the content, the design, was built by one person. Creating The Kingdom of English has required more than three years of dedication, thousands of hours of development, and continuous learning. Your use of this platform helps me keep developing and improving it further. Thank you for your support.
