How to Set ESL Assignments Online: Steps and Worked Example

By The Kingdom of English | Updated

To set ESL homework on The Kingdom of English, choose a class, set a start and end time, and select the work. Reading and listening use completion targets; grammar, writing and vocabulary let you select listed items. This guide explains those controls and gives you a worked plan for checking the work in the next lesson.

How to create an online ESL assignment

Before setting work, check that the intended learners are in the class, can sign in and can open the required practice area. Preview the task type on the devices they will use. An assignment does not remove account or subscription access requirements.

  1. Open ASSIGNMENTS from the teacher home page. In the creation form, use Select Class to choose the class receiving the work. The form assigns to a class; it does not contain an individual-student selector.
  2. Choose Start Date and Time and End Date and Time. A new assignment's start cannot be in the past, and its end must be after its start. Check the displayed dates and times with the class. Matching work counts toward this assignment during that window.
  3. Choose the tasks. Enter a number for Reading, Listening or Reading Roboteacher, or select entries under Writing Texts, Grammar Topics and Vocabs. Leave unused counts at zero and unused item lists unselected. At least one task is required; the table below explains the difference.
  4. Review the workload and choose Create Assignment. Start with a manageable task set that matches the lesson goal. If the form reports an overlapping reading/listening/RoboTeacher window for the same class, adjust the dates; these count-based windows cannot overlap one another.
  5. Check Current Assignments and explain the learner task. Share the goal, deadline and where learners should ask for help through your normal class instructions. The worked brief below is text you can copy into those instructions; it is not a claim that the form has a message field.

What can teachers assign?

Current choices in the assignment form
Practice areaTeacher selectsWhat to explain to learners
ReadingA number of completed reading tasks. The count does not select a particular passage or lock a difficulty. Easy, Medium or Hard tasks can count. Standard reading uses multiple-choice answers; a completed task requires at least 7 of 8 correct.
ListeningA number of completed listening tasks. The count does not select a particular recording or lock a difficulty. Standard listening uses audio and multiple-choice answers; a completed task requires at least 7 of 8 correct.
Reading RoboteacherA separate number of completed tasks. This is the separate AI-supported reading mode, not standard Reading. The learner assignment instructions require all five questions to be correct.
Writing TextsSpecific prompts from the list.Learners follow the writing and feedback workflow. Assignment completion requires a final recheck mark of at least 50; opening a prompt or receiving a first response does not by itself complete it.
Grammar TopicsSpecific topics from the list.Learners practise the selected topic until its completion target is reached. Selecting a topic is different from choosing each individual question.
VocabsSpecific vocabulary entries from the list.Complete the selected set in under 90 seconds. This timed completion is a platform rule, so check vocabulary use in context separately.

If an activity is unavailable, check which features are enabled for the class and whether learners can access the module. For a particular passage or recording, give a separate classroom task with that material. The standard reading/listening count cannot guarantee that every learner receives the same text. Our reading guide and listening guide each include an original task you can use together in class.

Worked example: questions about plans and routines

This is an illustrative planning example, not a report of results from a real class. The goal is to ask a yes/no question with the appropriate auxiliary, then give a matching short answer. Adapt the scope to what your class has studied.

Before the homework

Use selected items from the auxiliary-verb diagnostic. Compare Does she work on Saturdays?, Is she working now? and Can she help? Ask learners to explain why the first question uses does.

In the assignment form

Copyable learner brief

Open the assignment for our class and complete the listed practice before the displayed deadline. Our grammar focus is questions and short answers. In your notebook, change “Mina checks the bookings” into a yes/no question and write a positive short answer. Then write a new question about an action happening now. Bring one example you can explain and one question you still have. If you cannot open the work, tell me before the deadline.

The notebook response is a separate teacher-set follow-up, not an automatically tracked platform submission. A model for the first item is Does Mina check the bookings? Yes, she does. An example for the second is Is Mina checking the bookings now? Accept another suitable subject and action.

At the next lesson

Read the completion record, then ask for a fresh question using a new subject and verb. If the learner writes Does Mina checks…?, work on the base form after does. If the form is correct but the meaning does not fit, contrast a routine with an action in progress. Use a short grammar exit ticket to record what the learner can do after the follow-up.

How to check assignment completion

  1. From the teacher area, open CLASS OVERVIEW, then ASSIGNMENTS OVERVIEW.
  2. Choose the class and inspect the assignment card and learner rows. Read each done / required value against the tasks and date window you set.
  3. Use the separate activity overviews when you need the available practice records. Their measures differ: read the guide to progress records and their limits before comparing them.

A completion fraction is not an accuracy percentage or a language level. Standard reading/listening tasks need the completion threshold, and counted work must match the assignment. Repeating the same counted task does not create extra completions for that task. New completion credit is recorded only while the assignment is active. Editing dates later does not necessarily remove previously linked completion records.

If a learner shows no completion, first check access, the selected class, task requirements and dates. Ask what happened instead of inferring effort or ability from the number. If a learner has completed the target, use an original response or short classroom explanation to check whether the intended language transfers beyond the exercise.

Editing or removing an assignment

Current Assignments provides Edit and Delete. Edit opens the existing choices; review them and choose Update Assignment. Changing the selected work can change which completion records belong to the assignment, so tell the class what changed.

Use Delete only when you intend to remove the assignment. It removes the assignment and its linked completion records; it is not an archive. Keep any record your institution requires through its normal approved process before removing work.

Assignment questions

Can I assign a specific reading text to one student?

The current form assigns to a class. Standard Reading and Listening set completion counts, not individual passages, recordings or student-specific difficulty. Writing Texts, Grammar Topics and Vocabs provide listed items to select.

Does opening an exercise complete the assignment?

No. The task must meet its completion rule and count within the assignment window. For standard Reading and Listening, a completed task requires at least 7 of 8 correct answers. Other activity types have their own rules.

Can two reading and listening assignments overlap?

Count-based Reading, Listening and Reading Roboteacher assignments cannot overlap another count-based assignment window for the same class. Adjust the start or end time if the form reports an overlap.

Where can I see who has completed the work?

Open CLASS OVERVIEW, then ASSIGNMENTS OVERVIEW, choose the class and inspect the assignment card. The done / required values show completion against the assigned tasks. Use separate activity overviews and classroom follow-up for further evidence.
